DecEmmerdale Christmas Special
Ahead of Emmerdale’s hour-long Christmas Day Special bride- and groom-to-be, Lucy Pargeter (Chas Dingle) and Tom Lister (Carl King) spoke to RTÉ TEN about the drama ahead.
First up, Lucy spoke about how Chas feels on the morning of the wedding?
She’s nervous and unsure. Not knowing which way she’s going to go and what would be the right thing for her to do. Whether to get married and forgive Carl or whether to go through with the revenge plan that Charity has put in place. In spite of everything, does she still love him?
Yes, she’s in love with him. He’s done it so many times to her that she really didn’t think it was going to happen again. But she does love him and she genuinely thinks that he loves her and that he’s so into the idea of getting married and having the baby. Chas has pushed it a little bit far I think with the baby lie, but she just wishes it was all true and wishes that she was going to be happy and that this was happening for real. What has been her motivation for the long-haul revenge?
I don’t know if she’s totally sure what’s keeping it going. It’s like a snowball going down a hill, it starts off and then Charity just fuels it and it gets more and more out of control. Chas just feels like it has to be seen through to the end now. Not necessarily because it’s what she wants though. She does want to humiliate him but she doesn’t really want to have to go through with this. It’s out of her control and Charity is so adamant that she does it, she’s kind of being controlled by Charity too.Is she having second thoughts about going through with it?
Yes really serious doubts. She knows he’s finished with Eve. She’s seen how he’s reacting. They do sleep together the night before the wedding and she kind of succumbs to him and wants to be back in that happy situation. So she’s seriously thinking about going through with it and then trying to explain to him afterwards why there is no baby, no cars, no honeymoon and so on. She says to Charity and Cain ‘well I’ll just tell him, he’ll be fine - he loves me’ but they give her a reality check that he’ll hit the roof. What do you think is going through her mind when she walks down the aisle?
A mixture of nerves and also dreaming that she wants it to be for real. She’s lapping up how she should be feeling as a bride but she’s nervous knowing what she’s supposed to do next. The whole time that this has been going on and she’s been pretending that she’s pregnant, it’s how she imagined it would actually be and part of her desperately wants it to be real. How does she feel about Eve at this point?
Well, Carl is Carl and it could have been anybody really but Eve offered it to him on a plate. I don’t think the day is so much about Eve for Chas, it’s about Carl. She hates Eve and wants to humiliate her and whack her one, but it’s more about what happens between her and Carl and Eve is just there to back up the story or to look humiliated in the corner.Could she ever forgive Carl?
She’s done it before, she’s forgiven him before. Carl’s very persuasive and they are meant to be together so she could quite possibly forgive him again, yes.Have you enjoyed filming the wedding?
It’s been quite difficult because we filmed some of it out of story order which can be hard with the emotional stuff. For instance, the first scene we did was the last scene of the episode. It’s been fantastic. After the first day of filming the actual wedding scenes, I went home and I was so full of adrenaline. I’d enjoyed it because it was a real challenge. It’s the first time I’ve been blessed with a Christmas day storyline and I’ve been trusted with a massive episode so nerves are rattling around and I’m just hoping I can do a good job and do the show proud. Jane Pearson who’s written the script has done an amazing job. It’s been exactly how I imagined it and really easy to learn because it’s so well-written.Tell us about the dresses.
I had real input with the dress, from the beginning of the design period to the end. It was great because I wanted the wedding to be completely un-Chas. The make-up is almost as if she’s stripped herself back and made herself into something that Carl’s hopefully going to look at and think ‘wow’. Chas has stepped up her game really. The dress is amazing. Anita Massarella the designer just totally got the idea. We sketched it out and it’s kind of how I would like my own wedding dress to be. I love the style and it fits like a glove. You just can’t eat anything! The bridesmaids’ dresses are the opposite. Nasty, cheap, tacky, 80s style peach blancmange dresses, something you’d use as a knitted toilet roll cover. Gennie’s got no fashion sense anyway and probably likes it. Charity says ‘I’ll do anything to help you out’ and so the dress is purely to make Eve look as disgusting and vile as possible and humiliate her. That’s how Chas gets back at Eve really, by making her wear this peach creation!Tom Lister Interview
Now it’s Tom’s turn to talk about love-rat, Carl. Is he in love with Chas or is he going along with the wedding to make her happy?
I think he is genuinely in love with her. He’s been playing away but then realised that she is the one he wants and the one he has always wanted. Now that she’s pregnant and everything, he is just absolutely over the moon. He never thought that he was going to want to have kids with anyone again or go down that road but then the chance of having it with Chas and re-starting his life over again - he wants to do all that. The whole thing with Eve was just a bit of fun at first and he’s kind of put that to bed and wants to start afresh now and wipe the slate clean and move on.How does he feel about having a baby with Chas?
Surprisingly he’s really, really up for it and thrilled about the thought of having a child and a family. Also the business is back on track now and they’ve got the house to themselves pretty much so he’s just really looking forward to starting his life over again. He sees this as his chance to redeem himself from all of the rubbish that he’s done in the past, to start afresh and really try and do right. This child will almost be the ultimate chance to reinvent himself as a good dad, good husband and a good family man.Does he care about Eve or was their relationship just a bit of fun?
I think he cares about her a lot. He does really like her. I don’t think he was actually in love with her but he cared about her loads, loved spending time with her and loved the fun of it. Obviously the passion side of it was a given. He doesn’t particularly want to hurt her but at the end of the day she isn’t Chas. She doesn’t quite cut it in comparison. Eve will always be the other woman so he just needs to kill it but having tried to stop it so many times that in the end he has to be cruel to end it for good. How guilty does he feel about the affair?
I don’t think he feels that bad about it at the moment because he’s pretty much got away with it. Chas hasn’t found out. So he feels bad that he’s hurt Eve and can see how upset she is, but because he’s got away with it with the most important person - Chas, he doesn’t feel that bad. He’s thinking ‘I did quite well there, I got away with it’.Is he concerned that Chas could still find out and he could lose her?
Yes, I think as time goes on and he’s starting to realise just how much he loves her and how lucky he is to have her, he realises that he has completely jeopardised it. That’s when the guilt starts to come in because he’s thinking how could I have done that to you when I love you so much. He didn’t set out to have an affair but in his mind Chas hadn’t shown him much attention and it was there for him on a plate so he just went for it. He obviously doesn’t want her to find out and he’s panicking a bit. He’s just convincing himself that he’s covered all bases and got away with it.Is he nervous that Eve could ruin the wedding day?
Yes, she’s very capable, and so are Jimmy and Edna but he thinks he’s played his hand so cleverly with those guys that he’s shut them up. So the potential’s there and a bit of him is panicking but he doesn’t actually think anyone will say anything. Eve would lose so much face and basically become the village pariah. She’s made friendships in the village so she wants to keep quiet about it. Also she’s stood there in a bridesmaid’s dress so if she was really going to blow the whistle on the whole thing would she really have let it go that far? What can viewers expect from the episode?
It’s a fantastic episode, it’s been so much fun. The wedding is a really long scene, about ten pages long and the drama is totally encapsulating. There are some great lines and it was so much fun to film. And then in the end, without giving too much away, it’s really quite touching and heartbreaking. Because ultimately you just see a load of people who are caught up by this complete screw-up of the affair. It shows that if you decide to go down that road and succumb to temptation, it can literally just incinerate everything. What has been the highlight of this storyline for you?
I’ve loved the fact that it’s been slow and real. The affair has taken it’s time to get hold so that you care about what’s happening. Chas has taken her time to find out and then her time to plot her revenge. It’s all just really gradually moved to this big crescendo and that’s what I’ve loved. The feedback has been great. I think the story has had real peaks and troughs and ultimately the way it ends, I was thrilled by it. I think everyone wants Carl to get his comeuppance but then secretly people want Carl and Chas to be together. The hour-long special of ‘Emmerdale’ is on Christmas Day at 6pm on UTV and 7pm on TV3.

DecLister’s tribute to producer Blyth
Tom Lister has paid tribute to late Emmerdale producer Gavin Blyth, saying he should be proud of the soap’s Christmas storyline.
In the festive plot, viewers will have to wait and see if Tom’s alter-ego - businessman Carl King - finally ties the knot to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter), following his affair with Eve Jenson, played by Suzanne Shaw.
“One of the things about this whole Christmas storyline… we feel so blessed with the stories he’s entrusted me, Lucy and Suzanne with, and this Christmas episode is a real climax to the story we’ve been involved in over the last four or five months,” he said.
“It’s so upsetting to think about, but we’re really proud of him and we know he was really proud of us and what we created together over the last two years.”
Gavin, who passed away following his battle with cancer last month, took over Emmerdale in January 2009, having worked at Coronation Street before.
“It’s gone from strength to strength. He’s told one fantastic story after another and we’ve been gaining viewers, 10 per cent over the last 12 months. This has been a testament to Gavin,” Tom continued.
He added: “In March, we’re moving to a brand new facility which he organised. It was going to be Gav’s crowning moment. It’s such a gut check he won’t be there to see that, but we’re so proud of what he’s done with the show. We miss him so, so much.”

NovTom Lister: ‘Carl will be devastated’
Tom Lister has predicted that his Emmerdale character Carl King will be left distraught if Chas Dingle goes through with her plans to humiliate him on his wedding day.
This week, fans have seen Chas (Lucy Pargeter) pop the question to Carl and falsely claim she is expecting his baby - prompting him to commit to a long-term future with her.
However, unbeknown to Carl, Chas’s actions are a complete façade as she is plotting revenge following her discovery of his secret affair with Eve Jenson (Suzanne Shaw).
Speaking to Soaplife about the storyline, Lister explained: “He’ll be gutted if Chas has the balls to go through with her revenge plan - and it won’t just be his pride that’s hurt… He was thrilled when Chas said she was pregnant. He’s really happy about the baby. He wants to give Chas whatever she wants - a big Christmas day wedding, anything to make her happy.”
The actor continued: “He realises his fling with Eve was a massive mistake, based on excitement and lust. He wants to become a proper family with Chas and the baby. He’ll be devastated if it all comes crashing down.”
However, asked whether he feels sorry for Carl, Lister replied: “I don’t. He’s behaved appallingly and he’s been a complete fool.”
Emmerdale’s Chas, Carl and Eve storyline is expected to reach its climax in the soap’s Christmas Day episode. -

NovOk Magazine Interview: Suzanne Shaw, Tom Lister & Lucy Pargeter
HELL hath no fury like a woman scorned…. and once Emmerdale’s Chastity Dingle finds out that her partner Carl King has become a lot more than just good friends with their house guest Eve Jenson, there’s no telling how many ways she’s going to make them pay for it! For actress Lucy Pargeter, who plays Chas, it means the promise of playing out a juicy slow-burn revenge. ‘I think every woman on earth, if she discovered she’s been cheated on, would have plenty of ideas of what they’d do – so it’s been fun to see what the writers have come up with!’ says 33-year-old Lucy. For Lucy’s fellow stars Tom Lister and Suzanne Shaw, who play the cheating Carl and Eve, the compelling eternal-triangle storyline has brought them some interesting reaction from members of the public. ‘I get it all – older women give me dirty looks in the street and shout “marriage-wrecker!”’ reveals Suzanne, 29, whereas 32-year-old Tom has had somebody greet him with: ‘My wife wants to kick you in the face!’ Thankfully most of the ‘abuse’ is given with a wink and a smile, but it also proves that these guys are pretty good at their day job. Off camera, all three performers are the best of pals, so in between takes of their busy schedule we rushed them down to Leeds’ Blackhouse Grill restaurant, where between tasty mouthfuls, they filled us in on more about their characters’ tangled web which will keep fans gripped from now until Christmas…
What’s it like for you three working together on the show, playing out such a tangled web of deceit and duplicitous love lives?
Suzanne: The three of us are always having a giggle on set. It’s a relaxed environment, and as much as we concentrate on all the high drama, it’s not taken too seriously, and once the scene finishes, we can all chill out together. So you get the best of both worlds.
Tom: It’s been absolutely brilliant. It’s quite bizarre at times what you get asked to do in this job, but to get this kind of storyline is a gift. The more tangled the situation, the more Carl acts like a big kid – and I just love playing that, and seeing him dig his own grave!
Lucy: It’s such a laugh – not on screen of course, but for the three of us as actors and friends together. There are some great scenes as Chas ramps up her secret revenge on Carl. I think every woman on earth, if she discovers she’s been cheated on, has all these ideas of what they’d do, so it’s been fun to see what the writers have come up with.
What kind of reaction have you had out and about from members of public?
Suzanne: It is funny that there are a lot of people out there who can’t seem to split reality from fiction, and that does make me giggle – but I guess it means we’re doing our job well! I get a lot of older women going: ‘How naughty are you? Why are you doing this?’ Some of them are really going for it and they’ll give me a dirty look! But nine times out of ten it’s absolutely fine.
Tom: It’s been a bit of a mix. At first, people were going: ‘You’re a lucky bloke, what a job you’ve got, going to work with all these beautiful women!’ But the flip side is that these days he’s becoming an absolute git, treating both women pretty abominably, so that people are hurling abuse at me, calling me a love rat! Most people say it with a smile, thankfully.
Lucy: I think it’s satisfying when people give you such a big reaction. If you don’t have people coming up to greet you, you know you’re doing a rubbish job! Some people have told me Chas should have stayed with Paddy but I don’t think she would have a fulfilled life. He’d have been comfortable, but the lust would never have been there!
We’re on tenterhooks with the knowledge that Chas is about to discover Carl’s affair with Eve – what can we expect over the coming weeks?
Lucy: It’s all about to kick off. Chas finds out that Carl’s been unfaithful to her by finding Eve’s bra under their sofa! Once she’s put two and two together, she’s obviously mortified – but then she decides to have a bit of fun with it. What’s great is that the audience is in on the secret that the two of them aren’t aware of. They think they’re getting away with it, but Chas has now got the upper hand.
How long is Chas’s revenge going to go on for?
Lucy: Chas is going to be completely heartbroken by it all, but the revenge isn’t just a quick slap, it’s going to be a slow-burning process – and everything comes to a head on Christmas Day. You’d think that Chas would automatically go and punch Eve’s lights out, but this way she’s getting her own back a bit more deviously. We need something big on Christmas Day, but I don’t know if it’s going to be a punch – it might be something where Chas gets the complete upper hand. Those two will get what they deserve!
Suzanne and Lucy, you obviously both get on very well, but what’s it like playing rivals – are there some bitchy set-to’s coming up?
Suzanne: We’ve got quite a few, when Chas finds out the truth about Carl and Eve – for example, when Chas puts some toffee in Eve’s hat, which later hardens in her hair! I think the greatest thing of all is that while Eve and Chas are big rivals, off-screen Lucy and I are such good friends, and our kids get on really well – they go out on play dates.
Lucy: It’s great to have that relationship with Suzanne. If we didn’t get on so well, heaven knows how we’d feel with some of our on-screen rivalry! As it is, we can really go for it – and have a laugh when the camera stops rolling.
Suzanne, tell us more about Eve’s toffee torture – it must have been a sticky situation for you!
It’s on bonfire night, and after Eve leaves her hat with Edna, Chas sneaks in and puts some toffee in it! So when I put it on, the toffee hardens in my hair – and Chas, feigning concern, sets about tugging a comb through Eve’s hair and then she cuts it. The actual toffee was like wig glue, and it was all over my hair. It was an absolute nightmare, doing a night shoot and having to get all of that out – it meant hours of washing it!
How do you feel about being given such a big storyline as this one?
Lucy: This is the first time I’ve been trusted with a Christmas Day storyline, so that’s quite a responsibility! But I’ve had loads of wicked stuff over the past seven or eight years – I’ve had catfights, punches, great Dingle dramas, I’ve had love, tragedy – but to be honoured with the Christmas Day storyline is the biggest challenge I’ve been given so far.
Tom: Chas is such a well-loved character that viewers will want her to get revenge on Carl – and that’s fine by me! It’s starting with little moments where it’s funny – but panic-stricken for Carl and Eve – so the audience is enjoying the noose tightening around our necks, as it were. But the show goes out at 7pm, so Chas can’t quite do a John Wayne Bobbitt on him, but she does her best to bring Carl literally down to his knees.
Suzanne, how would you describe Eve – is she a man-eater or is there a little more depth to her than that?
Initially she is a minx, a proper man-eater, and doesn’t really think about any consequences of her actions. But I do genuinely think that she’s fallen in love with Carl, and she’s going to go through a lot of heartbreak over the next few months. I don’t think she’s as shallow as she has been. I think there might be a nice little twist coming, and you might see a softer, more vulnerable side to her, which is great for me to portray.
Do you think Chas and Carl ultimately belong to each other?
Tom: I think Chas and Carl keep finding themselves back with each other, despite all the circumstances that have happened in the past, like the death of his father, or the times that he’s cheated. Deep down, Chas is the one who gets him more than anyone else does – but unfortunately, he can’t quite keep it in his trousers when it comes to a pretty blonde. At the end of the day, Carl is just a bit of a spoilt brat really; he wants to have all the toys to himself and can’t quite help himself when temptation comes his way.
Lucy: I do think they’re made for each other. Carl can’t help himself – he’s a man! He’s done it in the past. The initial shock kind of gives way to her going, how could I ever expect him not to do something like this? Even though he absolutely adores her, he just can’t help himself, and she knows that. I think it’ll either be the cement or the coffin!
Tom and Suzanne, as the illicit lovers, what’s your steamiest scene together?
Suzanne: There have been a few tasteful bedroom scenes but there are more to come. At first, those scenes are nerve-wracking. At the end of the day, as much as you’re friends and close, it’s still an uncomfortable situation to be put in, especially when you’ve got a load of crew around who I don’t know that well! I don’t know how these actors on more risqué dramas get butt naked, because even in a strapless bra I feel uncomfortable on set!
Tom: There’s one that’s just been on screen, when Jimmy walked in on them – they were downstairs but almost about to get it on, as it were. There’s also a big one coming up, when after their moment in the sack, Carl sees Chas pull up on the drive and bundles a half-dressed Eve out the back door – with her bra left under the sofa! More often than not in those scenes, we just collapse into giggles. I’m constantly taking the mickey out of Suzanne; she’s always having a go at me for ribbing her, but that’s just what I’m like.
Tom, what does your wife Jenny think of your Emmerdale shenanigans?
She’s not an actress, so it’s a bit foreign to her, but she’s got used to it all – she’s fantastic. She knows it’s all just make-believe and she laughs it off. We don’t tend to watch it together – we’re often putting our two young boys to bed around that time – and I’m afraid Jenny’s a bit addicted to EastEnders. I’m trying to wean her off it! She knows Lucy and Suzanne too and she gets on really well with them both.
All three of you are pretty good singers – any chance of an Emmerdale singalong in one episode?
Suzanne: There are some great singers in the cast, and a lot of them do charity gigs. It’s amazing the talent we have, there’s always a lot of fun going in the Green Room. Right now, though, I’m more interested in my acting career than being a singer – and the notion of singing in an episode, karaoke-style, does not appeal to me at all!
Suzanne, what’s life at home like these days with your five-year-old son Corey and DJ husband Jason King?
Everything’s really good. Jason’s doing his DJ work, and I’m working hard – we’re like ships in the night most of the time! We juggle the parenting with great difficulty – it is tough, but we get it done as best as we can!
